Type 1 environmental noise monitoring & general acoustic measurements with Euterpe 2007

Tests have shown that Euterpe 2007 can itself perform acoustic measurements that comply with international standards when used in combination with a type 1 microphone. Euterpe 2007 is however not certified as a type 1 sound level meter and it is not the intention of SLM solutions to get this certification in the future.
The innovative Euterpe 2007 software can however obtain type 1 measurements if we connect the digital interface of a basic, hand-held, type 1 certified sound level meter to an E-PC (a PC that runs Euterpe 2007).
Euterpe 2007 is capable of reading out the ‘type 1’ measured data of the connected hand-held sound level meter in real time and storing this data into the E-PC’s internal memory.

So what is the added value of Euterpe 2007 if you need a hand-held sound level meter anyway?

1) Memory: Euterpe 2007 can store the data measured by the hand-held sound level meter onto the E-PC’s large hard drive or other PC memory, making very long measurements possible. Most basic class 1 sound level meters only have an internal memory of < 1MB making them unsuitable for long, environmental monitoring measurements.

2) Audio recording: By connecting the AC output of the hand-held sound level meter to the audio input of the E-PC, Euterpe 2007 has advanced capabilities to record the sound itself into a .wav file.

3) Communication: The E-PC will often be situated in a remote location. The user may want to be able to view measurement data or follow up on the instrument status.
  • Transfer of measurement data and/or .wav audio recordings from the E-PC to another PC that the user has direct access to. All communication means between 2 PC’s are then possible. Ex.: communication via TCP/IP, GSM modem, radio modem, UMTS modem, ….
  • Euterpe 2007 is capable of automatically sending out SMS messages (SMS notification) to inform the user of the instrument status. Ex. Warning message when the memory is < 1GB, overload notification, event detected based on a user defined threshold, still alive message every 4 hours, …
4) Timer: Euterpe 2007 users can make use of a whole range of timer functions concerning sound level measurement data and audio recordings. Different audio recording trigger levels can be set for different parts of the day/week. It is also possible to enable a delayed start and to enable measurements to take place is specific parts of the day/week. In this way the user may restrict the monitoring activities to take place only during business hours, weekdays only, …

5) Logging of additional data from other external instruments: Euterpe 2007 is capable of logging the data of other sensors that are connected to the E-PC. Ex. a weather station, a radio controlled clock.

6) Extended analysis: Euterpe 2007, when connected to the AC output of a basic hand-held sound level meter, can visualize and store the real time frequency spectra up to 1/96 octave band, even when the hand-held sound level meter is not capable of doing this itself. Statistical percentiles Ln (L1 to L99) can also be visualized and stored.
